Solar and geothermal heating

solar thermalWhat is working well in Edinburgh already.Examples already working well in and around Edinburgh include:
– The Commonwealth pool has a solar thermal system.
– Old mine workings are a potential heat source for the new Shawfield housing development
– 10 new homes in a small development in Colinton have geothermal heat from a 100m bore hole. The architect firm was Eco-logical Developments.
– The Green Homes Network is made up of more than 1,000 properties including sustainable eco-builds, historic stone cottages, listed buildings and everything in between. Please visit: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland/tools-calculators/green-homes-network
– Other heat sources could be used, wastewater and sewage for example.

    What you can do
    – Individual: Install geothermal or solar heating systems in your house – like this you could get one step closer to being independent from the grid and be free from excessive heating bills, e.g. the company Renewable Heat http://www.renewableheat.com
    – Community: Install geothermal or solar heating systems in your community building, halls or churches – like this you could get one step closer to being independent from the grid and be free from excessive heating bills, e.g. the company Renewable Heat http://www.renewableheat.com
    – Business: Install geothermal or solar heating systems in your business premises – like this you could get one step closer to being independent from the grid and be free from excessive heating bills, e.g. the company Renewable Heat http://www.renewableheat.com

The average home can get about half its hot water from solar thermal panels. Zero carbon Britain estimates that geothermal heat could generate up to 10% of our current electricity demand. Source: http://zerocarbonbritain.com

    – The usage of zero carbon Combined Heat and Power systems (CHP) and District Heating can be developed further. Although district heating is standard technology and commonly used in other European countries, e.g. in Sweden, Denmark or Germany, it is still not very common in the UK.

What you can do.
  Individual:
– Turn your heating down 1°C. Wear a jersey if necessary.
– Have one fewer showers a week.
– Fit a heat pump if your area is suitable for this technology.
Community: Install a heat pump in the community hall.
Business: Explore how heat pumps can be used in your business.

A heat pump is a ‘heat concentrator’. It takes ‘dilute’ (low temperature) heat energy from the ground, air or water, and delivers it as ‘more concentrated (higher temperature) heat. Heat pumps need electricity. For every unit of electricity used they can deliver 2-4 units of heat. According to the Zero Carbon Britain report, heat pumps are a great way to turn renewable electricity into heat. Source: http://zerocarbonbritain.com.
Equally, CHP and district heating are only a viable zero carbon heating alternatives to traditional gas heating if the fuel source used is renewable, e.g. using synthetic gas/biogas or biomass.
